Meet Your Psychiatric Provider

Hawa Fofanah, PMHNP-BC, is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with a clinical background that spans cardiac care, family medicine, and psychiatric health. Before specializing in psychiatry, Hawa worked as a Registered Nurse in inpatient cardiac settings and later as a Family Nurse Practitioner in primary care — where she witnessed firsthand how difficult it was for patients to access timely psychiatric evaluation.

That experience shaped her commitment to accessible, patient-centered psychiatric care. Hawa provides initial psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management for adults navigating depression, anxiety, mood disorders, schizophrenia, OCD, insomnia, and other mental health conditions. She offers telepsychiatry sessions so clients can receive care from the comfort of their own homes.

Hawa joined the HITH Clinical Services team in 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions About Psychiatric Services

Q1: What is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)?

A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse with specialized training in psychiatric and mental health care. PMHNPs are licensed to evaluate, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions, and to prescribe and manage psychiatric medications. At HITH Clinical Services, our PMHNP is board-certified (PMHNP-BC) and brings extensive experience across multiple healthcare settings.

Q2: What conditions does your psychiatric team treat?

Our psychiatric team provides evaluation and ongoing treatment for a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and other thought disorders, ADHD and neurodevelopmental conditions, OCD, insomnia, and co-occurring substance use disorders. We specialize in complex and treatment-resistant presentations.

Q3: What happens during a psychiatric assessment at HITH Clinical Services?

A psychiatric assessment at HITH Clinical Services is a thorough initial evaluation designed to understand your full clinical picture — your history, current symptoms, medications, and goals. Following the assessment, your provider will discuss findings with you and collaborate on a treatment plan that may include medication management, coordination with your therapy team, or referrals as needed.

Q4: Do you offer telepsychiatry?

Yes. HITH Clinical Services offers telepsychiatry so you can attend psychiatric appointments from home. We serve clients via telehealth across Maryland, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia. In-person visits are available as needed.

Q5: How does psychiatric care coordinate with therapy at HITH Clinical Services?

One of the core strengths of HITH Clinical Services is integrated care. Our psychiatric providers and therapists communicate directly and work from a shared understanding of your goals. This coordination means your medication management and your therapeutic work are aligned — not siloed — which supports more consistent progress over time.
